BIOGRAPHY
Mikis Nicodemou was born in 1941 in Cyprus, in the village of Peristeronopigi. He started painting in 1958, when he graduated from the Pancyprian Gymnasium. He took his first painting lessons at the Pedagogical Academy (1959-61) from the painter Andreas Chrysochos. In 1961-1963 he served as a teacher in Larnaca, at Astiki Sholi Kalogera. At the same time he continued to paint in Nicosia, where he always lived, and to frequent Gallery Apophasis – the studio of Christoforos Savva – from whom he was also influenced. In 1963 he left Cyprus to study in France on a French government scholarship. In Paris (1963-64) he studied painting at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, in the atelier of Maurice Brianchon, a recognized painter of the École de Paris. In 1964-65 he studied in England, at the Bournemouth & Poole College of Art. In 1965 he emigrated to America and in 1967, when he was employed in the public schools of Long Island, New York, he started graduate studies. He attended Hofstra University, where he studied history of art and painting with Stanley Twardowitz and Ted Kurahara, known modern painters of New York. He finished in 1971 with the degree M.A. in Humanities. In 1981-86 he attended C.W. Post College, Long Island University, and received the degree M.S. in Education. In 1996-1997 he completed an independent study of abstract expressionism and free studies in painting at Stony Brook University, with Mel Pekarsky, a known painter of Long Island, as his mentor. On Long Island, where he lives permanently, he continues to exhibit his work in galleries and museums of the area since 1969. Ιn 1980 he returned to Cyprus for a retrospective exhibition in Nicosia, at Gallery Zygos. In 2003 he exhibited his latest work at Gallery Kypriaki Gonia, in Larnaca. Since 1999 he retired from public education and he is occupied with painting, garden design and writing.

Ο Μίκης Νικοδήμου γεννήθηκε το 1941 στη Κύπρο, στο χωριό Περιστερωνοπηγή. Άρχισε να ζωγραφίζει το 1958, όταν τέλειωσε το Παγκύπριο Γυμνάσιο. Πήρε τα πρώτα μαθήματα ζωγραφικής στην Παιδαγωγική Ακαδημία (1959-61) από τον ζωγράφο Αντρέα Χρυσοχό. Το 1961-63 υπηρέτησε ως δάσκαλος στη Λάρνακα, στην Αστική Σχολή Καλογερά. Παράλληλα συνέχισε να ζωγραφίζει στη Λευκωσία, όπου ζούσε πάντα, και να συχνάζει στην Γκαλερύ Απόφαση – το εργαστήρι του Χριστόφορου Σάββα – από τον οποίο και επηρεάστηκε. Το 1963 έφυγε από την Κύπρο για σπουδές στη Γαλλία με υποτροφία της Γαλλικής κυβέρνησης.
Στο Παρίσι (1963-64) σπούδασε ζωγραφική στην École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, στο ατελιέ του Maurice Brianchon, αναγνωρισμένου ζωγράφου της École de Paris. Το 1964-65 σπούδασε στο Bournemouth & Poole College of Art της Αγγλίας. Το 1965 μετανάστευσε στην Αμερκή και το 1967, όταν προσλήφθηκε στα δημόσια σχολεία του Long Island της Νέας Υόρκης, άρχισε μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές. Tο 1980 επέστρεψε στην Κύπρο για αναδρομική έκθεση στη Λευκωσία, στην Γκαλερύ Ζυγός. Tο 2003 εξέθεσε την τελευταία του δουλειά στη Γκαλερύ Κυπριακή Γωνιά, στη Λάρνακα. Από το 1999 αφυπηρέτησε από τη δημόσια εκπαίδευση και ασχολείται με τη ζωγραφική και τον σχεδιασμό κήπων.
